Well... we could spend years regurgitating and 'prettying up' what other people have already done really well, or we could go to the pub.

Here's our growing list of relevant glossaries and jargon busters... if you've found a better resource that you think we should let everyone know about, email us.

If there's a specific term that you are struggling with and want to know the meaning, email Uncle Stanley.

WHAT IS A 'BELLY BAND'...?

A belly band is an advertisement on a thin strip of paper/card that wraps around the "belly" of a magazine and is normally glued onto the edges of a double page spread advertisment for the same company inside the magazine.

This gives high impact, stealing the show on the front of the magazine and ensures that the advertiser's double page spread is the first thing that the reader sees.

NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH

If you are pregnant, a belly band is an elasticated circle of fabric that helps support a big pregnant tummy during the last heavy couple of months...

In sailing, a belly band is an extra cloth of canvas across the belly of a topsail or course, below the fourth reef-band of a topsail, and the second reef-band of a course, to strengthen the sail midway between the lower reef and foot.

In roofing, a belly band adds emphasis, calling attention to the ornamental siding used to finish the upper wall... (eh?)

And finally, if you have a naughty male dog who likes to cock his leg on your furniture, a belly band can help to eradicate the problem almost straight away!
