We sell media... Dan - online sales manager
What was your first job in media?
It was at Haymarket Publishing on one of their sexiest titles called Horticulture Week (known affectionately as Haute Couture) and had the distinction of being the oldest magazine in the country. And no, I have no interest in gardening.
What’s the best thing about your current job?
Online media is still new and is incredibly dynamic and no-one really knows what’s going to become of it. It pays very well because of this and furthermore is growing at a phenomenal rate.
Describe your worst ever day
Quite recently – when I was in the middle of a meeting and forgot I had chewing gum in my mouth. I put it on the saucer beneath the cup of tea I was drinking with my Appointment, a gorgeous young woman at Universal McCann.
Later forgetting I had placed the gum on the saucer, I put my cup down to rest for a while on the saucer: School boy error. The gum was stuck to the bottom of the cup now and when I picked it up one could be forgiven for thinking I was in fact eating a pizza with extra cheese. Because it had been heated, it went all stringy.
So I had to make a thing of it to relieve myself of the awkward situation but got my fingers stuck to the stuff and then it got stuck on my t-shirt and oh it was awful. My Appointment, far from gracious, looked at me in disgust as I sat there trying to recover my train of thought with chewing gum everywhere but my mouth.
What’s the one bit of advice you wish you’d been given when you started out?
Only do it if it’s something that you really want to do full time as you have to be committed. Don’t do it if you’re soul-searching – do what you should be doing instead and go back to college.
What’s your ultimate ambition?
To complete writing the screenplay I’ve started. It’s called Shrinking Violet and is a political drama/thriller. Then I’d like to write another and fix scooters for a living.
What media do you regularly consume?
Radio. Radio One in the morning, Xfm throughout the day – it’s on in the office – and Smooth at the weekend.
What media couldn’t you live without?
Radio
Describe your ideal Friday night?
Sticking my favourite records on in a bar somewhere with my pals and drinking a few sherbets.
