Media Sales Jobs - working in media sales

Overview

In the last few years customer magazines have burst onto the scene and continue to grow at a phenomenal rate. There are now nearly 1,500 customer magazines published in the UK, with a new magazine launched every day!

Most customer magazines are published on behalf of big, well-known consumer brands (think Tesco, Ferrari, British Airways etc) by a specialist publishing agency.

There are also many business magazines in this category produced on behalf of financial institutions such as banks for example.

79% of the population read a customer magazine* and because of their unique position amongst consumer magazines they can build brand stronger relationships and increase loyalty with customers.

They can also give higher levels of ad response and are often self-financing through advertising sales (the costs of producing the magazine are paid for by the advertising carried within it).

Is it for me?

Similar to Outdoor, this sector is growing rapidly but is smaller as a whole than consumer magazines or business media.

Because of this most sales vacancies will require experience, preferably gained working on a similar title dealing with agencies.

As a first jobber, you are best placed to cut your teeth with a business or consumer magazine publisher, get your basic training under your belt and then move to a contract publisher when you are ready for a new challenge, greater exposure, more responsibility and autonomy.
